Travellers sometimes choose a private car after buying rail tickets, perhaps because their luggage, companions or desired departure has changed. Make that decision using two separate figures: the confirmed cost of the car and any rail money you can actually recover. The amount already paid should not be confused with a guaranteed refund.
Identify the precise rail product
Open the ticket or purchase record and find the product name, travel date, passenger details and seller. SBB distinguishes between ticket types, including Supersaver and Supersaver Flex products, with different refund conditions. Consult the current official terms for the ticket you hold. A friend’s flexible ticket or an old screenshot does not establish what applies to yours. If the purchase was made through another seller, use that seller’s process for the relevant enquiry.
Obtain the full road quotation
For a Zurich city or Zurich Airport departure to Davos, approved one-way per-car rates are CHF 420 Economy, CHF 550 Van or E-Class, and CHF 780 S-Class. Confirm the actual pickup, vehicle suitability and any requested additions before comparing totals. Child seats are CHF 15 per seat per booking when requested. Other vehicles are on request. A changed origin, extra stop or service outside the quoted scope requires its own confirmation.
Compare the decision you can still make
Calculate the new spending needed to travel by car and subtract only a refund that has been established for your rail ticket. Then consider why you are changing: luggage handling, passenger needs, a hotel departure or the ability to remain together. Avoid claiming that a per-car fare is cheaper than rail without checking current fares for every traveller. Rail discounts, ticket products and the number of passengers can materially change that comparison.
Close the superseded arrangement
Once you choose, follow the applicable rail process and retain the outcome alongside the new transfer confirmation. If the refund is pending, treat it as pending in your travel budget. Tell every member of the party that the active departure is now the agreed car pickup, including its location and time. Remove unnecessary station meeting instructions from the shared itinerary so an old rail plan does not send one traveller and their luggage to the wrong place.
Questions about this journey
Are all SBB tickets refundable on the same basis?
No. Check the current conditions for the precise product and seller shown on your ticket.
Does a car booking cancel my train ticket?
No. The two purchases are separate and any rail cancellation or refund requires the appropriate process.
Can the car price be divided across the group?
You may calculate a personal share for budgeting, but the approved transfer rate is charged per car, not sold as individual seats.
